Why is OM the powerful word and will chanting of OM enhance the quality of your life?

By - Abhudai Pal

Om Namah Shivaya!

Om Shanti!
OM Namo Narayana!

The common letter among plenty of the mantras of Hindu religion is OM. Have you ever ruminated about the significance of OM as a word?

Why almost every sacred mantra in Hinduism begins with OM?

Is OM the word of GOD?

Is OM considered sacred only in Hinduism, or some other religions too focus on the piousness of OM?

Why is OM considered one of the most mysterious words and is often advised by the religious gurus to chant?

When did OM come into existence?

Does chanting of OM enhance the quality of an individual's life?

Does chanting OM relate to cosmic connections of the universe?

Does OM chanting have any scientific backing or is it just built on the assumptions of unquestionable faith?

The Word OM is pronounced by Saints and Godmen, so POWER of OM must be significant. The traces of OM are just not found in Hindu Religious Texts but in Buddhism, Sikhism, and Jainism too.

“In the beginning was the word, word was with GOD, as the word was GOD”: The Holy Bible. The word referred by Bible is OM and since The Bible hints that the word was GOD this implies that OM is GOD.

OM consists of 3 syllables A U M. According to Hinduism, OM originated from The Vedas between 1500-1200 BC. The chanting of 3 syllables of OM help in many ways. A sound invokes the Brahma within you i.e your creative aspect, U sound invokes the Vishnu within you i.e the preserver and M invoke Lord Shiva i.e your destructive aspect.

To understand the significance and enigma of OM, the Upanishad called MANDUKYA is dedicated to it. OM is also called PRANAVA, the energy that runs our prana/soul, according to The Upanishads and The Vedas.

OM is the union of Mind, Body, and Spirit. 3 syllables of OM include the Past, Present, and Future.

In Chakra System, OM is connected with Anja Chakra, The 3rd eye which is human intuition and Knowledge. Katha Upanishad describes OM as a primordial sound from which all other sounds and creations have emerged and is the force behind all existence and creation.

The Mandukya Upanishad tells OM as the imperishable word and contemplating over OM awakens the four stages of consciousness. In The Bhagwad Gita, Lord Krishna says,
“Nothing is greater than OM”. According to Sage Patanjali, OM is the voice of GOD.

Why should you believe in OM as the word of GOD?

A question worth asking, the importance of OM has been described by the religions too. If The Upanishads, The Vedas, The Holy Bible, and The Bhagwad Gita point towards OM, then there must be a profoundness in the matter.

If you are an atheist, then you must be believing in scientific backings, Isn't it?

The word OM has such frequency, that when chanted uplifts the person’s mood. The researches of NASA in 2012 and 2013 observed the same vibrations as that of OM in interstellar space. Thus, OM connects to the creation of the universe.

Another study in 2011 evaluated the effect of OM. When researchers took the functional MRI scans of participants, they noticed the same activity in the brain as from “Vagus Nerve Stimulation” (Vagus Nerve is your happiness nerve, you feel happy, compassionate etc when this nerve stimulates) from OM chanting.

In a world where researches have proved the connection of OM with the cosmic world, do you still have any valid arguments to disbelieve the importance of OM?

Sri Sri Ravishankar says “OM is the complete vibration of the body. AAA syllable affects the lower body, UUU the middle one, and the MMM the upper part”.

OM chanting has many benefits. Some are:

1-Enhances your creativity
2-Strengthens your immunity system
3-Improves concentration and the ability to focus
4-Has cardiovascular benefits
5-Provides better control of emotions
6-AAA sound strengthens the spine
7-Takes you to meditative state making you experience deep joy and connection within you.

If you are still not convinced, I have a small challenge for you.Sit straight with your spine erect and chant OM thrice while keeping your eyes closed. If doing this makes you feel better do it daily, else “Read The Mandukya Upanishad and convince yourself” or “Live in ignorance and do not experience the bliss of OM in your life”.

OM SHANTI OM
